Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Los Angeles Department of Consumer Affairs held a press conference announcing "Operation Steer Clear," a national enforcement action targeting automobile advertising. Several Southern California automobile dealerships have already been hit with enforcement actions resulting in consent orders lasting 20 years and carrying stiff penalties of up to $16,000 per day for future advertising violations. Chris Scali will talk about the history of automobile advertising enforcement efforts in California and explain some of the practices that the FTC is going after, as well as some of the guidance the FTC has published to assist dealers in avoiding enforcement efforts.
